Overweight/Oversize Permit
Under TAC Title 43, HCRMA is authorized to issue permits for overweight vehicles (up to 125,000 lbs) and oversized vehicles (up to 12 feet wide, 16 feet high, or 110 feet long). The Overweight Permit System allows approved vehicles to travel on designated routes within the Hidalgo County Corridor.
Permits are required for one-way trips when a vehicle exceeds standard size or weight limits. To ensure safe and legal transport, the system requires certified scale tickets and compliance with travel rules, including permitted hours, speed limits, and cargo restrictions. This helps protect local roadways and ensures safety for all roadway users.
Designated Routes
Overweight permits issued through the HCRMA are only valid for movement on the following routes:
- U.S. Highway 281 between its intersection with Pharr-Reynosa International Bridge and its intersection with State Highway 336.
- State Highway 336 between its intersection with U.S. Highway 281 and its intersection with Farm-to-Market Road 1016.
- Farm-to-Market Road 1016 between its intersection with State Highway 336 and its intersection with Trinity Road.
- Trinity Road between its intersection with Farm-to-Market Road 1016 and its intersection with Farm-to-Market Road 396.
- Farm-to-Market Road 396 between its intersection with Trinity Road and its intersection with the Anzalduas International Bridge.
- Farm-to-Market Road 2061 between its intersection with Farm-to-Market Road 3072 and its intersection with U.S. Highway 281.
- U.S. Highway 281 between its intersection with the Pharr-Reynosa International Bridge and its intersection with Spur 29.
- Spur 29 between its intersection with U.S.Highway 281 and its intersection with Doffin Canal Road.
- Doffin Canal Road between its intersection with the Pharr-Reynosa International Bridge and its intersection with Spur 29.
- FM 2557 (Stewart Road) from US 281/Military Highway to Interstate 2 (US 83).
- FM 3072 (Dicker Road) from Veterans Boulevard (‘I’ Road) to Cesar Chavez Road.
- US 281 (Cage Boulevard) from US 281/Military Highway to Anaya Road.
- US 281/Military Highway from Spur 29 to FM 1015.

Travel Restrictions
Permitted vehicles may only travel on designated routes within the corridor. Both the starting point and destination must be inside this approved area. Travel outside these routes can result in fines or penalties from the Texas Department of Public Safety.
Travel is not allowed during hazardous conditions, such as bad weather, visibility under 0.2 miles, or when construction or maintenance is in progress on the route.

How do I Get a Permit and do I Need to Carry it With Me?
You must have an HCRMA account and a certified scale ticket showing the vehicle’s weight for each permit. The original permit and scale ticket must be kept in the permitted vehicle at all times.

Vehicles must be weighed on scales that can measure both total weight and individual axle loads. The scales must be certified by the Texas Department of Agriculture or recognized by the United Mexican States.

How Much Does a Permit Cost and How do I Pay?
The permit fee is $206 and can be paid using an escrow account or a credit card. A 3% convenience fee applies to credit card payments. Permit fee is subject to change.

How Long is a Permit Valid for and What Time of Day Can Can it be Used?
The permit is valid 24 hours after activation. Overweight permits can be used anytime, but oversized permits are only allowed during daylight hours.

Are There any Axle Weight Limits?
Yes, there are maximum axle weight limits you must follow:
- Single Axel weight is 25,000 lbs.
- Tandem Axel weight is 46,000 lbs.
- Tridem Axel weight is 60,000 lbs.
- Maximum limits also apply to 4 axle, 5 axle, and trunnion axle.
